Rustic Italian Bread
Fresh Homemade Rustic Italian Bread is an Easy Crusty Bread you can make with just a few ingredients! I especially enjoy this bread with my favorite Italian Dishes & alongside some Hearty Soups. But it also makes great Garlic Bread, Sandwiches, French Toast or Croutons - if you ever happen to have any leftover π
Ingredients
Yeast Mixture
- 1 Cup Water (Warm, @ 100-110 Degrees)
- 2 1/4 tsp Active Yeast (or 1 Packet)
- 1 Tbl Olive Oil
- 1 tsp Sugar
Flour Mixture
- 2 1/2 - 3 Cups Flour (All-Purpose Works Well!)
- 2 tsp Sugar
- 1 tsp Salt
Instructions
- Prep Yeast Mixture by combining Warm Water, Yeast, Olive Oil & Sugar in bowl or measuring cup. Stir to combine and set aside to allow Yeast to bloom (froth) - takes @ 5 min.
- Prep Flour Mixture by combining Flour, Sugar & Salt in a large mixing bowl. Stir slightly to combine.
- Add Yeast Mixture to Flour Mixture and mix together until shaggy dough results.
- Turn out Dough onto a floured surface and gently knead to create a smooth dough ball (add a little water or flour as necessary).
- Place Dough Ball into an Olive Oil greased large mixing bowl, cover with a towel and let rise for 30 min - 1 hour (until about double in size) [1st Rise].
- Punch down Dough Ball, re-cover with towel and let rise another 30 min - 1 hour (until about double in size) [2nd Rise].
- Preheat oven to 375 Degrees. If using an Oven Stone, place in oven as preheating.
- Place Rustic Italian Bread Dough onto a parchment paper lined cookie sheet, flat sheet or peel/pizza paddle for transferring onto Oven Stone. You can also Bake the Rustic Italian Bread on a Cookie Sheet if you do not have an Oven Stone.
- Using a Bread Lame, Kitchen Shears or Sharp Knife, make some cuts into the skin of the dough of desired pattern. The deeper you cut, the wider the split/expansion will result once baked.
- Bake the Rustic Italian Bread at 375 Degrees for 20-30 min or until the Golden-Brown color of choice & a hollow tap is heard from the bottom of the loaf when tapped with your finger. [If using an Oven Stone, slide the Rustic Italian Bread off of the parchment paper & place directly onto the Oven Stone after the first few minutes of baking]
- Allow to cool slightly on a cooling rack & Enjoy!
Notes
Rustic Italian Bread stores well in a Linen Bread Bag or other containers/bags that allow a little ventilation, as this helps keep that Crusty Bread Texture you're looking for!
