Homemade Candy - Classic Chewy Gummy Bears Recipe

These Homemade treats are a Classic Chewy Gummy Bear, similar to those that you can find in the stores, but where you can control the ingredients & easily make them at Home! These Homemade Chewy Gummy Bears would be great to have as Party Favors, Treats for a Birthday Party or a great Snack for Movie Night with some Fresh Popcorn!

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Set Time in the Refrigerator 3 hours
Total Time 3 hours 25 minutes

Ingredients

Gelatin Mixture

  • 2 Tbl Gelatin (Unflavored) [or 2 Envelopes]
  • 1/4 Cup Juice (Cold) [Orange, Grapefruit, Cranberry, Watermelon, Pomegranate...]

Gummy Bear Sugar Mixture

  • 1/4 Cup Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Water
  • 2 tsp Lemon Juice (or 1/4 tsp Citric Acid)
  • 3-5 Drops of Flavoring (Flavor Extract) of Choice (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix together the Gelatin & Juice and set aside @ 10 min to allow the Gelatin to "Bloom."
  2. Combine the Sugar, Water & Lemon Juice (or Citric Acid) in a Saucepan. Stir well and heat on Medium High Heat until it reaches @235 Degrees by a Candy Thermometer or Lazer Thermometer reading. (This is between the "Thread" & "Soft Ball" Stage) (*see Notes below)
  3. Once the desired temperature has been reached, add 1/4 Cup Corn Syrup and stir until combined.
  4. Stir in the Gelatin Mixture until melted and well incorporated.
  5. Add 3-5 Drops of Flavoring of Choice and mix in well for even more flavor in your Gummy Bears! (Optional) (*see Notes below)
  6. Dropper the Homemade Chewy Gummy Bear Solution into the Gummy Bear Molds (or Loaf Pan).
  7. Place the filled Gummy Bear Molds or Loaf Pans onto a Baking Sheet and place them into the Refrigerator to set (@ 3 hours) or until firm to touch.
  8. Once Set & Firm, remove the Homemade Chewy Gummy Bears from the Molds (or Loaf Pan), pushing up from the feet portion of the Gummy Bear Molds to help the process.
  9. Place the Homemade Chewy Gummy Bears onto a Baking Sheet: 1st on their Feet @ 8-12 Hours; 2nd on their Back @ 8-12 Hours; 3rd on their Front @ 8-12 Hours; or until the Gummy Bears have dried slightly and cured to a Stretchy & Chewy consistency like the Classic Gummy Bears you can get at the store! This may take a day or two but is well worth the effort!
  10. Enjoy your Homemade Chewy Gummy Bears as a Sweet Treat on your Next Movie Night, for Birthday Partys or in Party favor Bags for your Guests!

Notes

    • To test the Sugar Mixture Temperature without a Thermometer, you can a dollop of the heated Sugar Mixture into a small dish of Cold Water. It will remain in a thread like or stringy appearance for the "Thread Stage" and you are able to clump it together with your fingers for "Soft Ball Stage."
    • You can play around with whatever flavor combination you prefer or can come up with. By adding a different Fruit Juice for the Sugar Mixture than the Flavoring you add later, you can make some combination Gummy Bears such as Mixed Berry, Fruit Punch or Tropical Punch! Have fun making your own Candy at Home!
    • These Homemade Chewy Gummy Bears store nicely in an airtight container or bag at room temperature.
