Homemade Apple Dumplings

Homemade Apple Dumplings

Our Family Recipe for Homemade Apple Dumplings are a Fun Fall Treat to make with the Rustic Flavors of Baked Apples in a tasty Dumpling Dough & Cinnamon Sauce.

Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time - Sauce 10 minutes
Bake Time 45 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 15 minutes

Ingredients

Apple Ingredients:

  • 12 Apples (Peeled & Cored) (*see Notes below)

Dumpling Dough Ingredients

  • 6 Cups Flour (All-Purpose)
  • 1½ tsp Salt
  • 4½ tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 Cup Shortening
  • 2 Cups Milk

Dumpling Sauce Ingredients

  • ¾ Cup Butter (1½ Sticks of Butter)
  • 3 Cups Sugar
  • 3 Cups Water
  • 4½ tsp Cinnamon (Mix Cinnamon with the Sugar to prevent Clumping)

Dumpling Filling Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Sugar
  • 2 tsp Cinnamon
  • ½ tsp Nutmeg
  • ½ Cup Raisins (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare Apples as above & set aside.

2. Mix the Dry Dumpling Dough Ingredients (Flour, Salt & Baking Powder) in a Bowl until combined.

3. Add & Cut Shortening with a Pastry Cutter or Danish Whisk until Shortening is Pea-Sized Pieces and Stir in Milk until the Dumpling Dough forms.

4. Turn out Dumpling Dough onto a floured surface and work together until it is a smooth & rounded disc.

5. Roll the Dumpling Dough out until it is about 1/4 - 1/8” thick and cut into 12 portions. Set aside.

6. Prepare Dumpling Sauce on Stovetop by Melting the Butter in a Saucepan, then Stir in remainder of ingredients (Sugar, Water & Cinnamon). Mix until ingredients are well combined & bring up to a simmer.

7. Simmer the Dumpling Sauce, stirring occasionally to prevent scorching or sticking, until the Sauce has thickened. Then remove from heat and set aside.

8. Prepare Dumpling Filling by combining all ingredients (Sugar, Cinnamon, Nutmeg & Raisins (if using) into a bowl and mix until well combined. Set aside.

9. Roll out each Dumpling Dough portion to size that will allow the dough to be able to wrap around an apple and place Prepared Apple into the center of Dumpling Dough portion.

10. Spoon the Dumpling Filling into the central hollow created by removing the core and bring opposite edges of dough around to the top of Apple. Press to seal, then repeat on the remaining 2 edges.

11. Press and crimp to seal the dough edges onto the Apple and place the prepared Apple Dumpling onto a Rimmed Baking Pan.

12. Repeat until all of the Apples have been filled, wrapped with dough & placed onto the Rimmed Baking Pan.

13. Pour the prepared Dumpling Sauce over all of the Prepared Apple Dumplings. (*see Notes below)

14. Bake the Homemade Apple Dumplings at 350 Degrees for 45 minutes, Basting the Apple Dumplings with the Sauce in the Rimmed Baking Pan every 15 minutes, until the Apple Dumplings are Golden Brown and the Sauce is nice and thick on top.

15. Place the Baked Homemade Apple Dumplings in the Baking Pans on Cooling Racks for about 5 minutes.

16. Serve Warm & Enjoy the Rustic Flavors of Fall!

17. Store the Homemade Apple Dumplings in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3-5 days. They reheat nicely in the Microwave! (*see Notes below)

Notes

- Place Peeled & Cored Apples in a bowl with Water & Lemon Juice (or Water & Produce Protect) to help prevent browning as you prepare the rest of the recipe.

- If you are not planning on baking all of the Apple Dumplings at this time, the unbaked Apple Dumplings can be frozen and baked at a later date!

- Simply place the Apple Dumplings you wish to freeze onto a baking sheet and into the freezer for about 2 hours. Then remove the Frozen Apple Dumplings & store them in a freeze safe Zip Top Bag or Vacuum Seal Bag. They will keep in the Freezer for about 3 Months.

- The prepared Dumpling Sauce, once cooled, can also be frozen in freezer safe containers and used once the Apple Dumplings are later baked.

- Thaw the Frozen Apple Dumplings & Sauce in the Refrigerator, then Bake as above!

- Serve the Apple Dumplings warm as is or with a scoop of Ice Cream. As you cut into the Apple Dumpling, the Filling placed in the center of the Apples creates a Lava Cake-Like Sauce that is so Delicious!

- You can also slice or coarsely chop the Apple & sprinkle the Dumpling Filling over the top of about 1 cup of Apple per Dumpling, it will be just as tasty! However, the whole Apple maintains its shape & has a fun presentation!
