Yeast Prep Time 5 minutes
Crumpet Batter Rise Time 30 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

Yeast Mixture

  • 2 Cups Warm Water (@ 110° F)
  • 2 1/4 tsp Active Dry Yeast (or 1 packet)
  • 1 tsp Sugar

Flour Mixture

  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt

Instructions

  1. Combine Yeast Mixture Ingredients (Water, Yeast & Sugar) in a small bowl, mix well and set aside for @ 5 min to confirm yeast is active and that it blooms.
  2. Stir together the Flour Mixture Ingredients (Flour, Baking Powder & Salt) in a mixing bowl until well combined.
  3. Add Yeast Mixture to Flour Mixture & stir until well combined to create the Crumpet Batter.
  4. Cover the Crumpet Batter bowl with a Towel or Cling Wrap and allow to rise @ 30 min or until the surface of the batter is nice and bubbly
  5. Heat a Skillet or Electric Griddle to Medium-High heat (275° F) and add a small pad of butter to melt.
  6. Scoop about 1/4 Cup of the prepared Crumpet Batter onto the melted butter of the Skillet or Electric Griddle. (*see Notes below)
  7. Cook Crumpets on 1st side 1-2 min or until bubbles appear on the surface, then turn down to Medium heat (250° F) and cook another minute until some of the bubbles pop around the edges.
  8. Turn down to Medium-Low heat (225° F) and cook another 2-4 min or until the surface is set & no more bubbles are popping.
  9. Flip the Crumpets and cook the 2nd side on Medium-Low heat (225° F) about 30 sec or until slightly golden.
  10. Transfer the cooked Homemade Crumpets onto a cooling rack (flat side down) & allow them to fully cool.
  11. Turn Skillet/Griddle back up to Medium-High heat, Re-Butter & continue to cook the remainder of the Crumpet Batter as above until used up.
  12. Enjoy these delicious Homemade Crumpets heated in a Toaster, slathered with Butter & your favorite Jam or Honey! They also serve nicely with savory toppings!

Notes

  • If you would like uniformly round Crumpets, you can scoop the Crumpet Batter into English Muffin forms on the Skillet or Electric Griddle.
  • To remove the English Muffin Rings (if using) - you may need a knife to loosen around the edges of the Crumpets.
  • Homemade Crumpets store in an airtight container in the refrigerator @ 4 days or you can freeze them for @ 3 months.

This combination of a Savory Pancake type texture on one side and English Muffin like nooks & crannies on the other side makes the perfect combination for your added Crumpet toppings!
