Homemade Canned Pears in Jars

By combining fresh pears from the tree with this canning syrup, you end up with a sweet treat from nature! I also go over, step by step, How to Water Bath Can the Pears. That way the Canned Pears store for an extended period of time in your pantry and can be used throughout the year as a snack or for adding some great natural sweetness to your desserts!

Prep Time (Depends on # of Pears) 30 minutes
Cook Time for Pears 5 minutes
Water Bath Canning Processing Time 20 minutes
Total Time 55 minutes

Ingredients

  • Fresh Pears (The More the Better!)
  • Canning Syrup (See below for ratios of Sugar to Water)
  • Fresh Fruit Produce Protector Solution (I use Ball's Fruit-Fresh Produce Protector) [3 Tbl Produce Protector/2 Quarts Water]

Instructions

  1. Peel Pears, cut in half lengthwise and core. Place Pears into Produce Protector Solution and set aside.
  2. To prepare the Canning Syrup, choose sweetness (see ratios below) and mix together sugar & water in a pot. Bring up to a boil so that the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Add a single layer of Pears to the Canning Syrup and cook @ 5 minutes, until Pears are warmed through.
  4. Place Pears into pint jars, followed by the Canning Syrup, leaving a 1/2" headspace.
  5. Wipe rims of jars and place lid/ring on each jar, finger tightening the ring.
  6. Place jars into water bath canner for processing, making sure water covers the jars by an inch or two. The minimum processing time is 20 min; add time as necessary based on your altitude.
  7. Once processing is complete, let the jars sit in the water bath canner for about 5 minutes, then transfer to a towel/dish drying mat for 12-24 hours for cooling and sealing. Listen for the pings as they seal!
  8. After 12-24 hours, you can remove the rings, making sure the jars all sealed, label jars and place in a cool, dry place for storage. 50-70 degrees is optimal.
  9. If any jars did not seal, place them in the refrigerator for enjoying now!

Notes

Extra Light Syrup = 1 1/2 Cups Sugar & 5 3/4 Cups Water

Light Syrup = 2 1/4 Cups Sugar & 5 1/4 Cups Water

Medium Syrup = 3 1/4 Cups Sugar & 5 Cups Water

Heavy Syrup = 4 1/4 Cups Sugar & 4 1/4 Cups Water

You can play around with the sweetness of the canning syrup. Check out ratios for making Extra Light, Light, Medium or Heavy Canning Syrup in the Recipe above. Having these Home Canned Pears in your pantry will allow you to have some sweet treats from nature in a jar!
