Today we will be going over How to make Homemade Spicy Pizza Sauce! I used the KitchenAid Stand Mixer as well to help cut down on the time for prepping the ingredients for this Pizza Sauce Recipe. I will be making a big batch in the Recipe Video (link to YouTube Video below), but I also go over the amounts & ingredients for doing a single batch if desired in Recipe Card below. This is a Robust & Spicy Pizza Sauce that is great on Pizza Night or used as a Condiment or Dipping Sauce! We also go over Step-By-Step How to Water Bath Can your Homemade Spicy Pizza Sauce. We’ll use the Cooktop Water Bath Canner (for Water Bath Canning) to process jars of Spicy Pizza Sauce – it is so Simple to do! That way we’ll have some jars of Homemade Italian Tomato Sauce on our pantry shelf, ready to use throughout the year with Pasta, Baked Dishes & our Favorite Italian Recipes!

Spicy Pizza Sauce - Water Bath Canning Recipe

Homemade Spicy Pizza Sauce Recipe

You can use this pantry staple in a number of recipes as a great spicy tomato sauce base for casseroles, as a dipping sauce for appetizers & for making pizza!

Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time - Varies Based on Desired Thickness 4 hours
Water Bath Canning Processing Time (minimum - Pint) 35 minutes
Total Time 4 hours 55 minutes

Ingredients

  • 6-8 Cups Tomatoes (Cored, Peeled & Mashed) - or - processed in a Food Mill / Food Strainer Attachment on Stand Mixer
  • 1/4 Cup Lemon Juice
  • 2 Tbl Sugar
  • 1 Tbl Garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 3 tsp Oregano
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 2-3 tsp Salt (Canning)
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp Basil (Optional)
  • 1 tsp Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1 Tbl Balsamic Vinegar

Instructions

    1. Prepare Tomatoes (*see Notes below) and place into a Nesco Roaster Oven or Large Stockpot.
    2. Add remaining ingredients to the Prepared Tomatoes and stir until well combined.
    3. Cover & bring Tomato Mixture slowly to a boil.
    4. Continue to cook at 250-300 Degrees until desired thickness. This may take @ 4-5 hours; checking every 30 min & stirring frequently to prevent sticking or scorching.
    5. Use Immersion Blender (or Food Processor/Blender in batches) if necessary to create a smooth sauce of desired consistency.
    6. Ladle the Spicy Pizza Sauce into warm canning jars leaving a ½” headspace.
    7. Remove Bubbles from the Sauce by slowing sliding a bubble removing tool along the sides & middle of the Sauce.
    8. Wipe rims & side threads of the jars and place lid/ring on each jar, finger tightening the ring.
    9. Place jars into water bath canner for processing, making sure water covers the jars by an inch or two. The minimum processing time is 35 min for Pint Jars and 40 min for Quart Jars; add time as necessary based on your altitude.
    10. Once processing is complete, let the jars sit in the water bath canner for about 5 minutes, then transfer to a towel/dish drying mat for 12-24 hours for cooling and sealing. Listen for the pings as they seal!
    11. After 12-24 hours, you can remove the rings, making sure the jars all sealed, label jars and place in a cool, dry place for storage. 50-70 degrees is optimal.
    12. If any jars did not seal, place them in the refrigerator for enjoying now!

Notes

  • Tomatoes can be prepared for this recipe in a number of ways:
  1. Blanch, Core, Peel & Mash
  2. Using a Food Mill (place Cored & Quartered Tomatoes through a Manual, Sauce Master or KitchenAid Stand Mixer Food Mill Attachment)
  3. Frozen Tomatoes that have thawed in the Refrigerator overnight can easily be peeled by simply hand and then mashed in a bowl!


Tomatoes can be easily prepared for this recipe using a stand mixer with a food mill / Strainer attachment. Links for some helpful Equipment options listed below.
